What is Hidden Deep?

Hidden Deep is an '80s-inspired sci-fi horror game that puts you in charge of a team of professionals sent to investigate a mining platform deep below the ocean floor. The facility has suddenly gone dark and it's up to you to get to the bottom of things.

Hidden Deep features a 2D top-down perspective that lets you navigate the sub-oceanic caverns using a variety of tools including grappling hooks, scanners, drones, and heavy machinery. You'll need to explore abandoned caves and mine shafts while also fending off hordes of dangerous alien creatures that have made their home in these dark caverns.

Despite being in Early Access, Hidden Deep hasn't yet reached its full potential. It's plagued by janky controls, uninspiring visuals, and twitchy physics. The game has a hefty 20 hours of content in its story mode, and it's also got a challenge mode that will let you tackle various mission objectives in randomized levels.

The biggest drawback is that it doesn't offer enough to keep you occupied for long. There's not a lot to draw you into the world, and there are no NPCs who can tell you anything of value like in a proper narrative-driven title.

The most notable novelty is the gameplay itself, albeit the small and slightly cramped UI. The game is played in a top-down view, with your avatar and a handful of other characters in a sprite-based environment. There's not much else to do but go from one screen to the next, and a surprisingly large amount of the game is spent on navigating claustrophobic tunnels and shafts with a flashlight in hand.
How to play Hidden Deep?

In Hidden Deep, you play as a search-and-rescue team member who’s sent into a mining and research facility that is more than a mile beneath the ocean floor. After 681 days of work, contact with the researchers breaks off, and you have been given a mission to go down and find out what has happened in the caverns.

In the game, you’ll be able to explore a series of sub-oceanic caves and mine shafts while also battling a number of dangerous alien creatures. You’ll have to use your specialized tools such as grappling hooks, scanners, drones and heavy machinery to navigate your way through the caverns and uncover what is going on.

You can also choose to take on the role of a Scout, who will help you get through unfamiliar areas and help minimize the risks that you might encounter in the caves. This is particularly important if you’re playing in co-op, as it can be difficult to navigate an unfamiliar area alone.

One of the biggest dangers in Hidden Deep is natural death, which can be quite painful if you’re not careful. As a platformer, the game features a realistic style of in-game physics, and you’ll need to learn how to deal with them effectively. Jumping off a ladder that’s too high or hitting an object will kill you, and this is something that you need to be aware of throughout your journey.

Your crewmates will also be susceptible to this, and you’ll need to be sure that they are kept alive while exploring the depths of the ocean. There are no check-points in a mission, so if you lose all your crewmates, it will be game over for you, and you’ll have to start the whole thing from scratch.

While a lot of the enemies in the game are very well-designed, some of them can be pretty squishy and hard to kill. For example, you’ll often come across flying bugs that can be very deadly if not killed quickly.

The graphics are a bit dull, and it can be hard to see exactly what you’re doing in some of the caves, as there’s no lighting that’s especially subtle. But if you look past the visuals, Hidden Deep offers up an atmospheric and dark sci-fi horror experience that will have you wondering what’s going on under the seafloor.

What is the story of Hidden Deep?

Hidden Deep is a 2D action & exploration sci-fi thriller set in an underwater research and mining facility that has suddenly gone silent. You are the leader of the second team that is sent down there to investigate what happened and rescue anybody who is still alive.

It's a dark sci-fi horror game with a militaristic theme and lots of falling, which makes for a compelling experience that will keep you tense as you work your way through the dungeons and caves that make up the world. Inspired by cult classic horror movies and the like, it's a thrilling and intense ride that will have you clamoring for more.

As you go, you'll be using specialized equipment such as grappling hooks and scanners to explore sub oceanic caves and combat the strange creatures that have emerged from the depths. The game features a narrative-driven story mode as well as a challenge mode, where you can tackle various mission goals in randomized levels alone or in co-op.

A good number of enemies are based on a variety of cult classic horror movies, and each one has a distinct personality and behavior. The physics engine that helps you manipulate the environment as you move your characters around is quite effective. But it also has its fair share of limitations and glitches that are a little bit more than frustrating, making for a less than perfect experience.

You'll need to be careful when you're climbing or shimmying down ledges, as it's easy to break your spine or suffer a nasty fall. This can be a problem if you have a lot of enemies to take care of or a very long, difficult section ahead.

Thankfully, you can get extra lives at the end of a section or in a boss battle, which makes the gameplay more manageable. But that's not to say that it isn't challenging.

Hidden Deep is a great action and adventure platformer with a good balance of realism and fun. It's a game that's worth exploring in Early Access, though it has some very big holes in its current build.
